Noah Movie Review & Film Summary (2. It's a modern blockbuster, chock full of the visual and aural and narrative tics we expect from modern blockbusters: flash- cut nightmares and hallucinations, prophecies and old wise men, predictions of apocalypse and a savior's rise, computer- generated monsters with galumphing feet and deep voices, brawny men punching and stabbing each other, and crowd scenes and floods and circling aerial views of enormous structures being built, scored to tom- toms and men chanting and women wailing. Advertisement. But wait: this is not the latest Marvel Comics epic. Nor is it a standard- issue messianic sci- fi film along the lines of . He's made a few changes. Okay, more than a few. This is the Book of Genesis after a page one rewrite. Among other things, Aronofsky has stirred in ideas from earlier film versions of Noah's story, plus bits from other religions and mythologies, including the Kabbalah, pre- Christian paganism and, it would appear, J. R. R. The film's most visually inventive sequence is an ellipsis in the main narrative: a self- contained, time lapse retelling of the birth of the universe—essentially a Big Bang story that could be dropped right into either version of the great science show . All the actors have elegantly sculpted eyebrows and gorgeous hair, particularly Russell Crowe's Noah, who in one scene sports a teased- up 'do that makes him look like a beefy version of Christopher Walken in . But in this version he is more of an action hero. When the flood waters rise, he changes again, becoming an antihero, and a menace to his own family; their ranks include Noah's wife wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), his sons Shem (Douglas Booth), Ham (Logan Lerman) and Japheth (Leo Mc. Hugh Carroll) and Shem’s wife- to- be Ila (Emma Watson). The latter was adopted by Noah as an infant. Much is made of the inferiority complex Ila suffers because of her infertility. She has a supernatural scar on her stomach and cannot bear children. Before the flood, God spoke to Noah, not in a voice but through a series of mysterious dreams that connect the events of Genesis 6- 9 with earlier sections. It goes like this: Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden after Eve fell prey to the serpent's charms and ate the forbidden fruit (from a tree that looks very much like the Tree of Life in Aronofsky's . The descendants of Cain and Abel waged war against each other. The descendants of Cain allied themselves with the The Watchers, a race of fallen angels or seraphim who were encrusted by hardened magma created when they fell from Heaven to earth like shooting stars and smashed craters in the ground; these creatures now lumber across the landscape like Transformers, or like the Ents as visualized in Peter Jackson's . The Watchers are big and scary, and at first they seem as though they'll be obstacles to Noah's mission, but they soon have a change of heart and end up helping Noah and his family build the Ark to beat the flood. But it's not all hearts and flowers after that, because Noah's gotten it into his head that only the animals should survive—that after the flood he will have to kill his wife and children and himself, to prevent sinful humanity from angering The Creator again. And it's here that things take a turn toward modern- day allegory. As Time's Richard Corliss points out in an excellent long analysis of . In this Biblical epic, water doesn't just rain down and creep up toward the Ark, it gurgles up from the soil, the cracked earth filling up like blood welling in wounds. Sometimes it erupts with geyser- like force. An aerial view of the flood spreading across the land evokes cancer spreading. A spectacular pull- back from the endangered planet shows the atmosphere dotted with dozens of hurricane cloud- whorls. Aronofsky has also added an action film subplot bulked up with obsessive antihero craziness and daddy issues. He's inserted the chieftain of Cain's descendants, Tubal- Cain, described in Genesis as “the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The character is a warrior- despot enemy of Noah's and (intriguingly) a dark mirror of Noah's gravest flaws and worst impulses. As inhabited by Ray Winstone, who plays this sort of raging bull character better than anybody, Tubal- Cain is a creature of pure appetite, and super- macho. The dude put the patriarch in . He thinks Noah's concern about the rape of nature is just a bunch of girly- man whining, stopping just short of calling him a hippie or a tree- hugger. He is determined to take over the Ark and fill it with his own tribe, or barring that, to get on board himself, to survive the flood he once dismissed as false prophecy. Advertisement. Get on board he does, and once Tubal- Cain and Noah are trapped within the same space: Tubal- Cain peeling off the dissatisfied members of the clan and working them, the way the serpent worked Eve; Noah losing his grip on sanity and goodness and turning into a mad sea captain. Suddenly it's a haunted- house psychodrama, with two bad daddies terrorizing women and children in the bowels of a waterborne Hotel Overlook. As Noah becomes more unhinged, he starts to physically resemble Tubal- Cain. By the time the two men trade blows, Noah isn't just fighting a murderous stowaway, he's fighting to suppress he own worst impulses. This is, as you've gathered, an immense, weird, ungainly, often laughably overwrought and silly movie, an amalgamation of elements from various literary and cinematic forebears. Some elements fuse beautifully and others seem to repel each other; still others float onscreen in isolation, like bits of wreckage carried along by floodwater. Aronofsky will rightly be criticized for adding a lot of images and notions that make Noah's story less, rather than more, special—elements you can't escape at movie theaters because every modern fantasy and sci- fi film and disaster picture seems to have been imagined by the same screenwriting hive- mind, and envisioned by the same boring CGI software. The Watchers with their clomping feet; the early scenes of tribal combat and . And yet there's still a ferocious originality to . It's a disaster movie with environmentalist overtones and CGI rock- beasts and animals and apocalyptic events, and musings on the primal roles of the father and the mother, and the parents' desire to control their uncontrollable children, and all of this is periodically interrupted by flash- cuts of the serpent in the garden, and a glowing hand picking forbidden fruit, and Cain bashing Abel's brains in silhouette. Sometimes Aronofsky puts everything else on hold so that Ray Winstone can deliver a monologue about why man is not just entitled but obligated to kill and eat animals and use the land however he sees fit, or so that Russell Crowe can tell the story of the Big Bang by candlelight or sing an infant to sleep in a quieter version of his Inspector Javert voice from . He always has been, from his debut feature . New) but because, even when you're confused or disgusted or bored, you still feel the director's mad passion radiating from the screen. Aronofsky has made a major, perhaps catastrophic tactical error, in that we can always feel his obsessive certainty but we can't quite translate it into our own terms, as we should be able to do with any fable or cautionary tale that's meant to illuminate or instruct. What's onscreen often feels more like a visual transcript of one man's fantasy or nightmare, with all the baffling or nonsensical juxtapositions of this and that and the other thing left intact, exactly as Aronofsky's sleeping mind first encountered them. The net effect reminded me of one of my favorite passages from the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 1. But it's not every day that you get to see a major American filmmaker speak in tongues, babbling to a theater full of strangers about the astonishing dream he had, a dream that he's sure is important, even though he can't explain precisely why. You don't see movies like this everyday. You don't see movies like this ever. That's not nothing. Midwest Traveler: Devil's Lake State Park, Wis. Add to that a much- hyped Nicolas Cage performance that doesn’t feel like he’s selling out, and you’ve got a breath of fresh air all round. Place > The Best Movies Of 2. The 2. 0 Best Japanese Animated Movies of the 2. Century « Taste of Cinema. Japanese anime are often about children, but they are certainly not primarily for a young audience. These films offer an insight into the subconscious of Japanese society. A country that during the Second World War believed in the irrefutable military power of the state and the myth of the “divine wind” –the self- sacrifice of the kamikaze pilots. However, after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan had to face the truth that there was a bigger power than its god- like emperor–the United States. The most remarkable pieces of the previous century, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, The Grave of the Fireflies, and Nausicaa from the Valley of the Winds were in one way or another, engaged with the nightmare of the Second World War, the shadow of which was overcast on Japan’s national identity, as well as the responsibility humanity played in the invention of weapons of mass destruction. At the same time, the self- reflective topic of a hyper- technocratic society also emerged, setting the question whether the quick absorption of Western technology will lead to the birth of a new demon to finally demolish what once was the Land of the Rising Sun. While some of the anime produced after the millennia appear to be a resumption of this topic (Metropolis, The Wind Rises, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence), the bigger picture offers more hope than the movies of the . The children of these anime, the representatives of the Generation Y, appear to be fighting a different battle from that of their ancestors. Their greatest challenge is to find a way to cope with the problems of everyday lives: the loss of a father (Wolf Children, A Letter to Momo), the uncertainties of teenage life and lack goals (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, 5 Centimeters Per Second), or the difficulties of finding one’s own identity (Spirited Away, The Cat Returns). While these problems might seem banal compared to the annihilating monsters of earlier movies, this is the generation who carries the difficult task of finally shaking off the shadows of the war and finding a way to live on. This list features the twenty best films of the Generation Y. A Letter to Momo (Hiroyuki Okiyura, 2. The experience of loss, life in the metropolis compared to that in the countryside, and the little demons of Japanese folklore are compulsory ingredients of a good Japanese animation for all ages. Sure enough, A Letter to Momo features all these, with a good amount of humor and emotional moments in addition. The scary- looking, but friendly ghosts definitely provide a few good laughs while they help Momo cope with the loss of her father. For those who are able to appreciate slower paced movies, it is touching to see how Momo gradually realizes that she isn’t the only one who has suffered and that her relationship with her mum needs to be reconciled. Although this anime does not compete with the magical perfection of Spirited Away, in the shadow of some purely funny and entertaining American animation, it is delightful to find gems like this, where wit is combined with a heartwarming, humane story. Nothing proves this better than the selection of awards A Letter to Momo won between 2. Tokyo Anime Award, Awards of the Japanese Academy, Asia Pacific Screen Awards and Annie Awards. From Up on Poppy Hill (Goro Miyazaki, 2. Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki failed to prove his talent with Tales from Earthsea, his directorial debut in 2. His second film, however, is the work of an already matured director, a beautifully entertaining Ghibli production that is in line with the studio’s best movies. From Up on Poppy Hill is set in the past and is the story of a group of school kids who try to save their clubhouse from closing down. As an adaptation of an . In contrast to the magical world of his father, Goro Miyazaki positions himself closer to reality. His heroine, Umi, is much closer to Isao Takahata’s characters in the Graves of the Fireflies than to any of the half- magical Miyazaki heroines, although her grace and strength can be compared to that of Naisicaa or Chihiro. Generally speaking, From Up on Poppy Hill is the best historical shoujo anime as of today, with great character design and Satoshi Takabe’s excellent score. The Cat Returns (Hiroyuki Morita, 2. The Cat Returns started as a short animation commissioned by a theme park. Although the commission was cancelled, Hayao Miyazaki didn’t give up on the project, and extended it to a sort of test film for new Ghibli directors to be overseen by Hiroyuki Morita. Over time, the film expanded and based on Morita’s storyboard, The Cat Returns emerged as a playful, experimental anime. As an homage to the old Ghibli directors, the movie features Baron Humbert von Gikkingen and Muta, the fat cat, from Yoshifumi Kondo’s Whisper of the Heart (1. The inhabitants of the Cat Kingdom represent the rest of the cast, and Haru, the (partially) human girl, receives the unwanted reward of having to marry the cat prince Luna after she saved his life. Haru’s journey to the Cat Kingdom is similar in some ways to that of Chihiro from Spirited Away; in order to find their real selves, they first have to lose themselves. Haru turns into a cat, while Chihiro loses her name and becomes Sen, and they can only retrieve their original forms once they are in possession of the knowledge of how to keep their integrity in the everyday life. Because of this similarity and the two cameo characters, The Cat Returns is often treated as a weak alloy of Spirited Away and Whisper of the Heart; however, it is a beautiful and playful instructive tale on the complicated Japanese culture of exchanging favors. Howl’s Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki, 2. Although not the best Miyazaki film of the twenty- first century, Howl’s Moving Castle deserves a place on this list. The moving castle itself is one of the most graceful Miyazaki creatures. As a medley of organic and steampunk shapes, it embodies the ideal unison of nature and the technical world. Meandering in the Wastes between two hostile countries, Howl’s castle is the place where the cursed Sophie seeks refuge as an old lady. Some elements of this anime recall the story of The Wizard of Oz, especially the character of the Witch of the Waste, who puts the curse on Sophie out of jealousy, and Turnip Head, the scarecrow she encounters on her way to Howl’s castle. Although this universe is home to several Western fairytale characters, it also features the demon of the military power, which is most evident in the scene where giant bombers leave a city behind in flames. As he turns the wicked witch into a harmless old lady, Miyazaki’s statement is that of transnational pacifism. He does not seek a party to blame or a stronger enemy to beat the opponent, but reconciles East and West in a transnational fairytale. Short Peace (Hiroaki Ando, Hajime Katoki, Shuhei Morita, Katsuhiro Otomo, 2. Short Peace is a collection of four short films. Katsuhiro Otomo, who managed the project, collaborated with three remarkable anime artists. Two of them, Hiroaki Ando and Shoei Morita, worked with the director before, on Steamboy and Freedom Project, respectively, but none of them had directed a feature film as of yet. Morita’s short, Possessions, features a samurai who has to mend various symbolic items on order to escape from a shrine. Otomo’s Combustible evokes the style of traditional Japanese paintings, but the starting shots also resemble a computer game. Hiroaki Ando’s Gambo also features painting- like visuals, enhancing the importance of traditional animation in opposition to the more prominent CGI. The beauty of these three shorts lies within their reference to Japanese religion and classic art, but Combustible is the one that manages to be the most innovative in its visual style. In contrast, to the three stories about the past, Katoki’s Farewell to the Arms is a dystopian sci- fi. The longest, and also the best, in its animation technique, the most notable about this episode when compared to other sci- fi anime is the complete lack of the metropolis. In place of the city there is only decay as the war of men and machines reaches a new level. Short Peace is a great demonstration of what the most innovative animators of the time are capable of, and hopefully Ando, Katoki, and Morita will soon get a chance for a full- length directorial debut. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Mamoru Hosoda, 2. A lighthearted coming- of- age movie about a girl, Makoto, and her two male friends, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is not a sci- fi anime, as the title might suggest. In this anime, Mamoru Hosoda does what is his strength: depicting the simple beauty of life in modern Japan. Although some fans tend to presume the problem of time travel makes the film more complicated than it seems at first glance, there is no need to speculate over the nature and theory of time travel to enjoy this movie. Moreover, the fact that some characters can transport themselves back in time is secondary to the plot, since the main focus is on how Makoto will be able to preserve her friendship with the two boys and find a purpose to her life other than just having fun. Everything you ever wanted to know about Dolokhov and Denisov in War and Peace, written by masters of this stuff just for you. Author Existence Failure - TV Tropes. This entry is trivia, which is cool and all, but not a trope. On a work, it goes on the Trivia tab. A Fandom's worst nightmare: A creator dies before completing his work, leaving it orphaned. This may result in the series Jumping the Shark if the replacement isn't very good, but at least you have closure. Worse would be if the series just isn't popular enough to justify going through the effort to find a new author, leaving fans to wonder What Could Have Been. In any case, it gets to be pretty sad that so many people lose their jobs because of one person's death, but if the work was good enough it's likely that those who worked on it won't have too much trouble finding another job. Or Creator Killer and Fallen Creator, where the author merely falls from grace and loses their reputation. Which is an absolute shame, as he quite clearly had great plans for it. Fortunately in 2. Shogakukan announced the story would reach a proper conclusion based on Ishinomori's original concept notes, sketches, and a novel draft. The cliffhanger ending of Getter Robo . One effect of that was that it took over three years to finish it, making it the longest- running single Gundam production until Gundam Unicorn, except the long running period for that has been planned from the start. However, the manga is still ongoing. Yoshida was also the original story creator for Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road, which didn't get picked up until 2. Luckily, she had the ending semi- planned out, and it was used for the anime. The resulting accident left her quadriplegic and mute. The manga was finished in 2. Moyoco Anno (yup, the wife of Hideaki Anno), working from Okazaki's storyboards and with her consultation, albeit on a Cliffhanger. Okazaki's rehabilitation continues to this day. He later regretted this decision and verbosely apologized to everyone in his farewell note (he ended it with an apology for . Sadly, the film is now stuck in Development Hell. The phrasing of the letter, which does not mention accident nor illness, suggests suicide. Fortunately, his will stated that, if he were to pass away, the baton should be passed to Kanichi Kurita (a popular comedian and impersonator), who voices Lupin from that movie onwards. In honor of Yamada, a message was placed at the end of the film's credits: . Kawakami succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2. Later on, however, series artist Yoshitoshi Abe announced they had found a new director, though who it is is currently unknown and no other news has been released. This, along with the passing of veteran voice actress Maralisi Tartarine, who played Ophiuchus Shaina, has currently left the state of the second season's dub up in the air. Allegedly, the staffer most responsible for Mewtwo's portrayal in the earlier film had passed on and fearing that they would ruin Mewtwo's characterization, they instead chose to create their own Mewtwo in which they could apply their own characterization to. Unfortunately, this did not go well with fans of the anime. She passed away in 2. He was still working on a very rough draft of Tintin Tintin And Alph Art when he died. Unfortunately, he never told anyone exactly how he planned to end it, and the incomplete story ended on a colossal Cliffhanger. Jacobs died while working on the second part of . When Goodwin died before completing the dialogue, Simonson looked at the script and decided it could be done as a . The story is included in the Manhunter collected edition. It took a great deal of soul- searching by Albert Uderzo over whether or not to complete it. Uderzo did, and then as a tribute to Goscinny continued their work alone. At a certain point in Ast. The rain was added by Uderzo to mark the point in the work where Goscinny left off when he died. It was finished by a group of different artists doing a couple of pages each and published a year later, with the proceeds going to charity. Additionally, before he died, he was in the planning stages of a collaboration with Warren Ellis. Ellis refuses to reveal any hints as to what the project was even about. Schulz at least had the sense to declare that even if he'd lived forever, some things in Peanuts would NEVER be concluded. There was, thus, no carefully hidden strip in which Charlie Brown gets the little red- haired girl, or in which Snoopy finished off the Red Baron. Nonetheless, he still only barely avoided this. He died the night before his final strip (written months prior) was released. The reason for the abrupt shift into a fairly unpleasant style is because the artist, Edvin Biukovic, had to quit due to health problems, which he later died from. He had mentioned in interviews that, if he DID die before completing the series, the series would continue all the way to issue 3. Sim's colleague Gerhard). Farlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Jerry Ordway, Jim Valentino and Keith Giffen, among others) inking Kirby's pages. The story arc was finished by Kirby collaborator Greg Theakston. As a result, several notable strips from DC Thomson's weekly anthology comics needed new artists immediately. An incomplete Biffo the Bear strip was completed by David Sutherland, who took over as its artist from then on. Desperate Dan became a reprint, so hard was it to find a suitable replacement (Ken Harrison eventually took over in 1. The Beezer's cover star Ginger and The Topper's cover star Mickey the Monkey both also had to be taken on by other artists. Biffo and Mickey were removed from the covers a few years later. After a 2. 7 year hiatus, he published his coda to Phil. Similar to Tintin and Alph- Art, the album has been released in a incomplete state. Moral: Team- books kill. In addition to the story never being resolved, plans to pitch the series for dead tree publication were abandoned since he'd expressed wishes not to publish until he'd had the chance to revamp his earlier writing. It was cut short just around the time the Earth King equivalent was introduced. The author, Lyralocke, died somewhat unexpectedly of heart problems. Shortly after his last full chapter was published, the writer was involved in a near- fatal accident. He spent two weeks in a coma, and then spent further weeks learning to use his arms and legs again. Nearly two months after the accident, he finally posted a short note to his fans letting them know what happened and that, as soon as he has the time and energy, will be continuing his stories. As if that wasn't sad enough, this heart- crushingly appropriate image was the last thing she posted to her blog. While this author has posted his fanfictions onto their Fanfiction. Net account, they have no intention of continuing them. What makes it worse was a new chapter was planned the same night of the shooting. According to this, she had passed of heart failure brought on by a cold. Apparently, he passed on in April that year. Varney's friend Blake Clark supplied Slinky's voice for the third films since it was felt that Slinky was too important to disappear offscreen. While he had finished the majority of his role as Mr Spacely, some lines had to be filled in by Jeff Bergman. Allegedly, George O'Hanlon was a somewhat poignant close call, finishing his final line moments before passing away in the recording studio, a handful of lines were still filled in by Bergman in the final film however. It remains to be seen if the sequel will address that. As she was a villain in the first movie, there is no reason to assume she would return in any sequel. Turns out, though, that this only meant . The Sea Is Watching, another screenplay Kurosawa had written and intended to direct, was also filmed by another director in 2. She produced a first draft script, but Lucas wasn't completely satisfied with it. Sadly, though, Brackett died of cancer before she could revise her draft. Lucas was forced to write the next few drafts of the Empire story himself, after which Lawrence Kasdan came on board to polish the dialogue. Andrei Rublev (film) - Wikipedia. Andrei Rublev (Russian: . The film is loosely based on the life of Andrei Rublev, the 1. Russian icon painter. The film features Anatoly Solonitsyn, Nikolai Grinko, Ivan Lapikov, Nikolai Sergeyev, Nikolai Burlyayev and Tarkovsky's wife Irma Raush. Savva Yamshchikov, a famous Russian restorer and art historian, was a scientific consultant of the film. Andrei Rublev is set against the background of 1. Russia. Although the film is only loosely based on the life of Andrei Rublev, it seeks to depict a realistic portrait of medieval. Russia. Tarkovsky sought to create a film that shows the artist as . The film's themes include artistic freedom, religion, political ambiguity, autodidacticism, and the making of art under a repressive regime. Because of this, it was not released domestically in the officially atheist and authoritarian Soviet Union for years after it was completed, except for a single 1. Moscow. The film was further cut for commercial reasons upon its U. S. As a result, several versions of the film exist. Although these issues with censorship obscured and truncated the film for many years following its release, the film was soon recognized by many western critics and film directors as a highly original and accomplished work. Even more since being restored to its original version, Andrei Rublev has come to be regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and has often been ranked highly in both the Sight & Sound critics' and directors' polls. The main film charts the life of the great icon painter through several episodes of his life. The background is 1. Russia, a turbulent period characterized by fighting between rival princes and the Tatar invasions. The film's prologue shows the preparations for a hot air balloon ride. The balloon is tethered to the spire of a church next to a river, with a man named Yefim (Nikolay Glazkov) attempting to make the flight by use of a harness roped beneath the balloon. At the very moment of his attempt an ignorant mob arrive from the river and attempt to thwart the flight, putting a firebrand into the face of one of the men on the ground assisting Yefim. In spite of this the balloon is successfully released and Yefim is overwhelmed and delighted by the view from above and the sensation of flying, but he can not prevent a crash landing shortly after. He is the first of several creative characters, representing the daring escapist, whose hopes are easily crushed. After the crash, a horse is seen rolling on its back by a pond, a symbol of life – one of many horses in the movie. The Jester (Summer 1. Andrei (Anatoly Solonitsyn), Daniil (Nikolai Grinko) and Kirill (Ivan Lapikov) are wandering monks and religious icon painters, looking for work. The three represent different creative characters. Andrei is the observer, a humanist who searches for the good in people and wants to inspire and not frighten. Daniil is withdrawn and resigned, and not as bent on creativity as on self- realization. Kirill lacks talent as a painter, yet still strives to achieve prominence. He is jealous, self- righteous, very intelligent and perceptive. The three have just left the Andronikov Monastery, where they have lived for many years, heading to Moscow. During a heavy rain shower they seek shelter in a barn, where a group of villagers is being entertained by a jester (Rolan Bykov). The jester, or skomorokh, is a bitterly sarcastic enemy of the state and the Church, who earns a living with his scathing and obscene social commentary and by making fun of the Boyars. He ridicules the monks as they come in, and after some time Kirill leaves unnoticed. Shortly, a group of soldiers arrive to arrest the skomorokh, whom they take outside, knock unconscious and take away, also smashing his musical instrument. As the rain has stopped the three monks thank the villagers for allowing them to shelter and continue on their way. As they walk on the heavy rain starts again. II. Theophanes the Greek (Summer–Winter–Spring–Summer 1. Kirill arrives at the workshop of Theophanes the Greek (Nikolai Sergeyev), a prominent and well- recognized master painter, who is working on a new icon of Jesus Christ. Theophanes is portrayed as a complex character: an established artist, humanistic and God- fearing in his views yet somewhat cynical, regarding his art more as a craft and a chore in his disillusion with other people. His young apprentices have all run away to the town square, where a wrongly convicted criminal is about to be tortured and executed. Kirill talks to Theophanes, and the artist, impressed by the monk's understanding and erudition, invites him to work as his apprentice on the decoration of the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow. Kirill refuses at first, but then accepts the offer on the condition that Theophanes will personally come to the Andronikov Monastery and invite Kirill to work with him in front of all the fraternity and Andrei Rublev, who according to Theophanes' comments has some fame as an icon painter in the outside world. A short while later at the Andronikov Monastery, a messenger arrives from Moscow to ask Andrei for his assistance in decorating the Annunciation Cathedral with Theophanes the Greek. Both Daniil and Kirill are agitated by the recognition that Andrei receives. Daniil refuses to accompany Andrei and reproaches him for accepting Theophanes’ offer without considering his fellows, but soon repents of his temper and tearfully wishes Andrei well when the younger monk comes to say goodbye to his friend. Kirill is jealous of Andrei and in a fit of anger, decides to leave the monastery for the secular world, throwing accusations of greed in the face of his fellow monks, who also dismiss him. Kirill stumbles out of the monastery into the snowy countryside and is pursued by his dog, but Kirill savagely beats it with his walking stick and leaves it for dead. Andrei leaves for Moscow with his young apprentice Foma (Mikhail Kononov). Foma is another creative character, representing the light- hearted and practical- minded commercial artist. Still he seems to be contemplative enough to get along with Andrei. III. The Passion According to Andrei (1. While walking in the woods, Andrei and Foma have a conversation about Foma’s faults, especially lying. Foma confesses to taking honey from the bee garden, after Andrei notices his cassock is tacky, and smears mud on his face to soothe a bee sting. While Foma has talent as an artist, he is less concerned with the deeper meaning of his work and more concerned with practical aspects of the job, like perfecting his azure, a colour which in painting was often considered unstable to mix. They encounter Theophanes in the forest, and the old master sends Foma away. As he leaves, the apprentice finds a dead swan and pokes at it with a stick. We cut to banks of a stream where Andrei and Theophanes are arguing about religion, while Foma cleans his master's paint brushes. Theophanes argues that the ignorance of the Russian people is due to stupidity, while Andrei says that he doesn’t understand how he can be a painter and maintain such views. This section contains a reenactment of Christ's Crucifixion on a snow- covered hillside which plays out as Andrei recounts the story and expresses his belief that the men who crucified Jesus were obeying God's will and loved him. IV. The Feast (1. Camping for the night on a riverbank, Andrei and Foma are collecting firewood for their group when Andrei hears the distant sounds of celebration further upstream in the woods. Going to investigate he encounters a large group of naked pagans, who are conducting a torch lit ritual for Midsummer. Andrei is intrigued and excited by the behaviour of the pagans but is caught spying on a couple making love, is tied to the crossbeam of a hut in a mockery of Jesus' crucifixion and is threatened with drowning in the morning. A woman named Marfa (Nelly Snegina), dressed only in a fur coat approaches Andrei. After explaining that her people are persecuted for their beliefs she drops her coat, kisses Andrei and then unties him. Andrei runs away, and is lost in the dense woods, scratching his face. The next morning Andrei returns to his group, including Daniil, and as they leave on their boats a group of soldiers appear on the riverbank chasing after several of the pagans including Marfa. Her partner is captured but she makes her naked escape by swimming into the river past Andrei’s boat. He and his fellow monks look away in shame. V. The Last Judgment (Summer 1. Andrei and Daniil are working on the decoration of a church in Vladimir. Although they have been there for several months the walls are still white and bare as Andrei is doubting himself. A messenger arrives with word from the furious Bishop to say they have until the Autumn to finish the job. On a nearby road in the middle of a field of flowers Andrei confides to Daniil that the task disgusts him and that he is unable to paint a subject such as the Last Judgement as he doesn’t want to terrify people into submission. He comes to the conclusion that he has lost the ease of mind that an artist needs for his work. Foma, impatient and ambitious, resigns and leaves Andrei's group to take up the offer of painting a smaller, less prestigious, church. Stone carvers and decorators of Andrei's party have also been working on the Grand Prince's mansion. The Prince wants the work to be done again more in line with his tastes but the workers already have another job, at the mansion of the Grand Prince's brother, and refuse. On a path through the woods soldiers accost the artisans on the orders of the Grand Prince and gouge their eyes out, so that they cannot replicate their work. Back at the church Andrei is dismayed by the news of their fate and angrily throws paint and smears it on one of the walls. Sergei (Vladimir Titov) one of the young apprentices who escaped the attack unharmed reads a random section of the bible aloud, at Daniil's request, concerning women. Being an orphan, he learned from a very early age to defend himself – a theory that got him into trouble quite a few times while in his first year on Baywatch. He likes to keep himself fit and likes to box. This helps him in some situations. Eddie is homeless during this time and is helped out by fellow Lifeguard Craig Pomeroy (Parker Stevenson). Eddie eventually managed to secure a place of his own. He developed a relationship with Shauni Mc. Clain. They eventually married and moved to Australia. He would remain there until his departure along with Erika in the beginning of Season 3. After his departure in 1. Warlock explained his departure was voluntary as he had been unhappy with the direction Baywatch had taken. Warlock later reprised his character for one episode in the spin- off series, Baywatch Nights in 1. Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. Shauni Mc. Clain (Erika Eleniak); (seasons 1–3); Shauni was a complete rookie when she started out as a lifeguard with Baywatch, being scared of people drowning and freezing up when people needed CPR, she was put under the wing of experienced lifeguard Jill Riley, where she became confident in her abilities. In her time at Baywatch she fell for and married her long term colleague Eddie Kramer played by Billy Warlock. Their onscreen chemistry and romance became real for a time. Erika Eleniak played in 4. It was reported by both producers and Erika herself that her departure was due to her dislike for the direction the show was taking. Trevor Cole (Peter Phelps); (season 1); Trevor Cole began life on Baywatch as a cocky and arrogant clubhouse lifeguard who, after a boat party that left his then girlfriend fighting for her life, realized how little about lifeguarding he actually knew. He decided to join Baywatch Rookie School where he passed top of his class. During his time as an L. A county lifeguard Cole made a number of preventions, earning the respect of his colleagues and those superior to him (including Mitch, who had previously disliked Cole for his amateur lifeguarding and his attitude towards the job). Towards the end of his stay at Baywatch there were hints of a romance between him and Jill Riley, but Cole was absent the day Jill died from a shark attack and Phelps left the show the episode later. All the while his disappearance was not addressed in the show. It's assumed that Cole went back home as he had previously expressed interest in returning to Sydney, Australia. Hobie Buchannon (Brandon Call, season 1; and Jeremy Jackson, seasons 2–9); the son of Mitch Buchannon; he forms a romantic relationship with his long- time crush, Summer Quinn. He was the longest serving lifeguard at Baywatch and retired in 1. Ben had a close relationship with Mitch Buchannon, and served as a mentor to him. Some time before the series started, Ben had crushed his hip when he jumped from a huge height to save a drowning fisherman. He was unable to swim after this injury and required the use of a walking cane. Captain Thorpe promoted Ben to lieutenant instead of firing him. He was eventually promoted to captain, after Thorpe's departure. The day he resigned, he made his final rescue when he jumped off a pier to save a young boy. He was then happy to 'go out on top'. Kaye Morgan (Pamela Bach); (recurring seasons 2–3, 5–6). Pamela Bach portrayed two other characters in later seasons and also made an appearance as another character in the first season Baywatch Hawaii. Roberta . They traveled across the country in their trailer and set up home in a local trailer park. Summer was a star athlete in her hometown winning many awards for swimming. Her mother's ex- boyfriend tracked them down and confronted Summer. When he began to get physical with her, Matt Brody stepped in and stopped him. This was the start of a long friendship between the two. Later, with the help of C. J. Parker, Summer overcame bulimia. Summer then left to pursue her education at a university. She is a main character in the 2. Baywatch feature film, where she is played by Alexandra Daddario. Matt Brody (David Charvet); (seasons 3–5, recurring season 6); Matt had a long- term relationship with Summer Quinn in the fourth season, and pursued a similar relationship with C. J. Parker in the fifth and sixth seasons. After a while, Matt went back to France unable to cope with Neely's return. He eventually returned, but after going on a holiday with some members of the team, he was never seen again, which suggests he returned to France again. He is a main character in the 2. Baywatch feature film, where he is played by Zac Efron. Casey Jean . Eventually left Baywatch and got married to a rock singer in Mexico, but unfortunately, it didn't last. She later opened up a Beach cafe in Hawaii and married one of her waiters Leonard. Parker one of the top 1. He was constantly trying to become a professional surfer and had a romantic relationship with Summer Quinn. He had a very strict military father, whom he did not get along with, and a mother who abandoned him. Due to his family circumstances, he lived alone on the beach in his van. He eventually did break into the professional circuit and left Baywatch to move to Hawaii. Stephanie Holden (Alexandra Paul); (seasons 3–6, recurring season 7); when Stephanie was seven years old, her father died in a helicopter crash in Vietnam. This affected her deeply and she developed a huge fear of helicopters. Stephanie was eventually abandoned by her mother and was raised by her grandmother. She developed a romantic relationship with Mitch Buchannon, and the two became very serious. The relationship ended abruptly when Stephanie left Mitch without explanation (she was married). Stephanie and Mitch eventually got over their differences and formed a strong friendship. She dies in season 7 from a lightning strike while at sea. Paul later reprised her role as the late Stephanie in a second season episode of the spin- off series, Baywatch Nights in 1. This scene was a near- death hallucination by Mitch. Caroline Holden (Yasmine Bleeth); (seasons 5–7, recurring season 4 & 8) Stephanie's younger sister who is a determined girl but is also very stubborn especially when it comes to her love life. Logan Fowler (Jaason Simmons); (seasons 5–6, recurring season 7); first appearance was in the season 5 premiere. The character had just recently arrived in California from Tasmania as part of a lifeguard exchange program. He had a reputation as being a top lifeguard in Australia but immediately began to cause problems once he arrived at Baywatch. He did not work well in a team or obey orders from his superiors, this caused him to clash with many of his fellow lifeguards, including Matt Brody and C. J. He also suffered from a childhood memory of watching his father, also a lifeguard, die in the line of duty while saving people from a burning boat, but was unable to escape himself before it exploded. Cody Madison (David Chokachi); (seasons 6–9). Mostly he is like a Tom Cruise of Baywatch, because of the women in Baywatch throwing themselves to him like he was a rock star. He had relationships with fellow lifeguards, C. J. Parker and Lani Mc. Kenzie. However both left him and got married. Neely Capshaw (Heather Campbell (season 5); Gena Lee Nolin seasons 6–8; and Jennifer Campbell, recurring season 9). She was re- made as a 'good girl' in season 7, and got her lifeguard re- certification after Mitch and Donna Marco (Donna D'Errico) learn of her saving an elderly heart attack victim with CPR following a botched drugstore robbery. Neely became romantically involved with Mitch and they eventually got married, after which she returned to her conniving ways. However, during the Baywatch reunion movie, Neely is last seen trying to get back together Mitch. Sheryl Whalen (Ingrid Walters); (recurring season 8–9)Mike . The robot butler and trips to the drug store in hovercars version hasn’t yet arrived, but the first 1. Sci- fi is almost as old as cinema itself —1. Georges M. Many so- called sci- fi blockbusters were really action movies with some fantastical trappings, rather than thoughtful, provocative examinations of the world we live in through speculation about worlds we might live in. That’s still true to an extent, but the last decade- and- a- half have seen a flourishing of smaller- scale, ingenious sci- fi pictures, as well as some dazzling bigger- scale examples with more ideas per se than explosions and laser fire. And with “Ex Machina” proving to be surprise hit this spring, the sci- fi idiom is the next in our Best Films Of The 2. Century So Far series (read Horror, Animated Films, and Music Documentaries). We set a few rules —no superhero movies (which is a genre unto itself these days), no films with sci- fi segments without the whole film being in the genre (see “Cloud Atlas” and “The Fountain”) and a few films that don’t quite feel like they are true science fiction. Otherwise, anything went, and the 2. Take a look below and let us know your favorites in the comments. The film was the best use of Cruise’s star persona in aeons (serving almost as a metaphor for the redemption of his own stardom), but the secret weapon, aside from a cunning evocation of video game tropes, the best alien warfare since “Starship Troopers,” and crystal clear direction from a back- on- form Liman, was Emily Blunt as the “full metal bitch,” making a strong case that she deserves to be the biggest star in the world. The film didn’t find the theatrical audience it deserved at home, but more and more people are catching on over time. Melding John Hughews David Lynch, and Albert Einstein into an ’8. Jake Gyllenhaal, in a star- making role) who receives visits from a sinister rabbit who may be trying to convince him to travel through time, it’s rich, funny, swooningly romantic stuff with a very fine cast (Patrick Swayze and Katharine Ross got well- deserved comeback roles, there’s a great cameo from producer Drew Barrymore, and keep an eye out for a young Seth Rogen as a bully), and a surprisingly melancholy tone. Kelly, just 2. 6 when the film was released, handles things with real flair (and a great ear for song selection), and while the Director’s Cut only makes the mythology more impenetrable, it’s a fascinating sci- fi puzzle- box on top of everything else. Lean, bloody, and with terrific action sequences (Quentin Tarantino called it his favorite film of the previous two decades), it’s also more than a mere genre piece: the students, and even their teacher (a smartly- cast Takeshi Kitano) are sensitively and three- dimensionally drawn, and its power as metaphor, both examining the power of violence and the demonization of youth, elevates it far above the tales of Katniss & co. Indeed, it cut a little too close to the bone for many, and landing in the aftermath of Columbine, it wasn’t released in the U. S. Some claimed the picture his worst (our review wasn’t very charitable), some thought it was a vision from the heavens, and as usual, when the dust has settled, more mannered judgments have taken root (more of a consensus Playlist opinion forms here). So yes, Nolan shoots for the fences in “Interstellar” and arguably does not connect in the same home run fashion he has for so many pictures in a row now. The dialogue can be really on the nose, while the ending some see as jumping the shark. None of us will make too strong of a case against any of those points. That said, Nolan’s film is still a dazzling, ambitious vision of love, time, space, and some deeper, perhaps fuzzier elements of the universe. It’s the place where the heart and quantum physics meet. While that might admittedly be a bit of an awkward intersection, its love- letter sincerity to humanity inspired by Nolan’s own children is at least visually awe- inspiring and occasionally breathtaking. Thanks to major properties like Game of Thrones and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, we’ve entered a golden age of sci-fi and fantasy properties being developed for. Just like in the real world, these fanciful Hollywood inventions would have terrible unforeseen consequences that would make living in a sci-fi universe a waking. A highly subjective but absolutely essential authoritative list. There are a lot of films coming for sci-fi, fantasy and action fans to get hyped for. Admittedly clunky in spots, it’s a film that will very likely only grow in estimation over time. But the film was a quiet, unexpectedly moving triumph, and was then exceeded on every front by Matt Reeves’ follow- up, one of the few sequels that trumps the original. Picking up after the ape- pocalypse, as Caesar (Andy Serkis) is forced to confront humanity again, as well as a new threat closer to home, the movie, even more than its predecessor, takes full advantage of the stunning performance- capture technology, which reaches something of an apex here. Beyond that, it’s also simply a remarkably well- told story: a rare summer blockbuster in which you actively root against violence taking place, with a borderline Shakespearean arc for its non- human hero, and Reeves’ stylish- but- unshowy filmmaking chops steering things beautifully. The 5. 0 Best Sci- Fi And Fantasy Movies Of All Time. We fly our geek flag high and proud around here, so when The Man told us to write an article on the 5. Man, this stuff is hard. In making this list, we decided to avoid super hero flicks, lean away from most monster movies, and allow as many sequels as necessary from deserving franchises. We also realized both genres offer a ton of viable candidates, so that meant more than a few great movies were left on the cutting room floor—our apologies in advance. So hop in your space cruiser, set your blaster to stun, and check out our list of the 5. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Year: 1. 97. 7Director: George Lucas. Purchase: Amazon DVDPerhaps you’ve heard of this one? If not, let us fill you in. It’s about a guy named Luk—oh, come on it’s freaking Star Wars. Is there a more textbook definition of sci- fi than George Lucas’ legendary franchise starter? The special effects and dialogue may not have fully stood the test of time, but the cultural footprint left by this universally loved space opera is arguably the largest by any movie of any genre. The Wizard of Oz. Year: 1. 93. 9Director: Victor Fleming. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Pitch perfect Judy Garland and the stellar cast. It’s clear by now that no matter how much times passes or advances are made on the CGI front, nothing will ever dull the magic of learning there’s no place like home. Minority Report. Year: 2. Director: Steven Spielberg. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Dick was a sci- fi genius, and Steven Spielberg tapped into Dick’s short story for the supremely suspenseful Minority Report. Here are a few examples of ways you can filter the charts: The Worst Sci-Fi Comedies of All Time; The Top 10 Sci-Fi Comedies of All Time; The Top 20 Sci-Fi Comedies. Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, CBE, FRAS (16 December 1917 – 19 March 2008) was a British science fiction writer, science writer and futurist, inventor, undersea. Tom Cruise is chief of the Pre. Crime police force in the year 2. Besides being a top- notch thrill ride, the film also leaves you with a host of moral questions to ponder once it’s done. We like that. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Year: 2. 00. 1Director: Peter Jackson. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Tolkien’s Middle- Earth masterworks. The scope and sense of immersion he established right off the bat with Fellowship of the Ring was ambitious and amazing. Even with the valid criticisms about the film’s runtime and laundry list of character names and places one gets bombarded with, this is still a standout achievement in fantasy filmmaking. E. T.: The Extraterrestrial. Year: 1. 98. 2Director: Steven Spielberg. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Steven Spielberg tells the story of a boy befriending an alien with superior skill, weaving suspense, comedy, thrills, and tears into a powerful 1. Young Henry Thomas is excellent as Elliott, as is the rest of the cast, and the stirring theme by John Williams. Alien. Year: 1. 97. Director: Ridley Scott. Purchase: Amazon DVD . But in 1. 97. 9, Ridley Scott took that title and with it, sci- fi horror to new levels with this tale of a commercial spaceship getting a smidgen more than they bargained for while exploring a distress call. The pacing and suspense is Grade- A, Sigourney Weaver is strong (and gets even stronger in Aliens), and the chest- popping scene is still shown in most major medical schools—or should be. Planet of the Apes. Year: 1. 96. 8Director: Franklin J. Schaffner. Purchase: Amazon DVD . The great Rod Serling having his hands on the screenplay surely helped, and the last scene of the film still stands tall as one of Hollywood’s greatest gotcha. Inception. Year: 2. Director: Christopher Nolan. Purchase: Amazon DVD . There’s so much drama, you could call it a dramatic film. There’s so much action, you could call it an action flick. But when the story involves a professional thief diving into the subconscious minds of his targets to get the goods, you know you’re in the world of science fiction as well. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Year: 1. 97. 1Director: Mel Stuart. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Gene Wilder is freaking sensational, and we’re still waiting for the Oompa- Loompas’ spinoff. Back to the Future. Year: 1. 98. 5Director: Robert Zemeckis. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Fox as Marty Mc. Fly is a joy to watch as he goes back in time to fix the present, and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown is equally awesome. Even if the film’s take on what kind of tech we’d have in 2. Godzilla. Year: 1. Director: Ishiro Honda. Purchase: Amazon DVDLike many sci- fi classics, Godzilla not only delivers a spectacle to look at, but also a poignant message to discuss after. Less than a decade after Japan was hit by atomic bombs in World War II, the themes of nuclear radiation and mass destruction were delved into via this iconic monster movie. Even if its spawn of sequels and offshoots only further entrenched its B- movie status, there’s no denying the impact of this creature on film and pop culture history. A Space Odyssey. Year: 1. Director: Stanley Kubrick. Purchase: Amazon DVD . When people say they hate it, we totally get it. Much of it is boring and (depending on who you talk to) nonsensical. But it’d also be criminal to not have it on this list for three reasons: 1) Its profound impact on future sci- fi films and filmmakers, 2) its ground- breaking special effects, and 3) its handful of magical moments created by Stanley Kubrick. If only there were more HAL 9. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Year: 1. 98. 0Director: Irvin Kershner. Purchase: Amazon DVDIt’s the consensus choice for the best of the six Star Wars films to date, and yeah, it should be. The Empire Strikes Back was darker, more intense, and more emotional than Star Wars. It also yielded a heavy load of unforgettable characters and moments, from the introduction of Yoda and Boba Fett, to Darth Vader’s “I am your father” bombshell. Perhaps the greatest sequel of all time, and surely on the short list for the best sci- fi adventures. Blade Runner. Year: 1. Director: Ridley Scott. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Loosely based the Philip K. Dick story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, this is film noir set fantastically in the future. Its vision of the future is bleak, dark, dangerous, and believable, with a moral tale about humans and technology too. We think it’s a smidgen overrated, but it certainly belongs on this list. Forbidden Planet. Year: 1. 95. 6Director: Fred M. Wilcox. Purchase: Amazon DVD ? Set aside 9. 8 minutes for Forbidden Planet, a landmark bit of sci- fi that leans heavily on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. It’s 5. 0s sci- fi at its stereotypical best, with terrific special effects (for the time period, of course), suspense, and a rich cheesy goodness you don’t mind getting all over you. Casting bonus: Leslie Nielsen! The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Year: 2. 00. 2Director: Peter Jackson. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Andy Serkis and the CGI wizards who created Gollum really steal the show, creating one of the most memorable non- human characters in film history. The Matrix. Year: 1. Director: The Wachowski Brothers. Purchase: Amazon DVD . The Wachowski Brothers built a crazy deep (and yeah, crazy confusing) world that gave sci- fi lovers everywhere a massive Wachowski in their pants. The mushy money- grab sequels however, won’t be making this list. Metropolis. Year: 1. Director: Fritz Lang. Purchase: Amazon DVD . German director Fritz Lang took audiences far into the future with amazing set design and ground- creating visual flair. And despite it being older than bubble gum, canned beer, and the ballpoint pen, the themes of the film – class warfare and love – are as fresh as ever. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Year: 1. 97. 7Director: Steven Spielberg. Purchase: Amazon DVD . But one exception to that rule came hurtling into theaters in 1. Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Richard Dreyfuss is great as the dude whose run- in with a spaceship leaves him obsessed with learning more about what he experienced. The soothing five notes played by the alien spaceship almost makes the anal probing worth it! Avatar. Year: 2. 00. Director: James Cameron. Purchase: Amazon DVD . You can’t quibble with the fact that Avatar is an absolute visual spectacle, and perhaps the greatest use of 3. D ever seen. On those merits, it sits somewhere in the latter half out our top 5. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Year: 1. 98. 3Director: Richard Marquand. Purchase: Amazon DVDReturn of the Jedi finished off the original Star Wars trilogy in grand style, with more space swashbuckling and alien encounters. The first half of the film, with Luke Skywalker’s mission to free Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt’s clutches, nicely carries over some of that edgy bite found in The Empire Strikes Back. The final battle between Luke, Darth Vader, and the Emperor helps to make up for all those unfortunate Ewok shenanigans. Aliens. Year: 1. 98. Director: James Cameron. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Regardless, Sigourney Weaver earns her stripes as one of the fiercest female action heroes of all time as she goes womano- a- womano vs. Great pacing, big thrills, and one of the best sci- fi films of the 8. The Day the Earth Stood Still. Year: 1. 95. 1Director: Robert Wise. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Expecting maturity from sci- fi back then was nearly unthinkable, but director Robert Wise nails it, despite being limited by the constraints of the time period. King Kong. Year: 1. Director: Merian C. Cooper & Ernest B. Schoedsack. Purchase: Amazon DVD . The 8th wonder of the world. One of the greatest achievements in cinema history, the original King Kong is a flat- out masterpiece, especially on the technical front when you consider the film was made during the infancy stage of the motion picture industry. It’s the story of man’s ill- fated attempt to make money off of a giant ape, but it’s also an inter- species love story, perfectly blending fantasy, action, and drama, and in one. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Year: 2. 01. 1Director: David Yates. Purchase: Amazon DVD . Even if you don’t think Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was the best of the eight films, it’s hard to dispute the notion that the series mostly got better as it went along.
