Holocaust Movies on Netflix You Haven't Seen. When I wrote my post 1. Movies on Netflix Jews Should See little did I know it was going to be my most popular post ever. Directed by Chanoch Ze'evi. With Bettina Göring, Katrin Himmler, Monika Hertwig, Rainer Höß. A look into the lives of the descendants of the top Nazi officials who. Watch Brad Pitt Handle Rowdy Troops in 'War Machine' Trailer. Late journalist Michael Hastings' 2012 book 'The Operators' inspired Netflix original film. In that post I avoided a lot of Holocaust movies because I thought 1) it would be too depressing to have them all about the Holocaust and 2) there are a lot of interesting stories about Jews other than the Holocaust. Little did I know that would be a big disappointment for a lot of readers. So, because there has been so much demand for a list of Holocaust movies on Netflix. I’ve defined a Holocaust movie to be primarily about the victims of the Holocaust and/or atrocities committed by the Nazis, not just the military goings on during that time. There are tons of WWII movies but not actually that many on the Holocaust. Here are the best on Netflix. This documentary told in four parts, is a rare examination the role of these death squads and how they carried out their horrific task. French with subtitles. WINTER IN WARTIMEA beautifully shot coming of age story about a teen in Nazi- occupied Holland that wrestles with family loyalties, painful choices between safety and courage, and the harsh realities of war.
RIPHAGEN: THE UNTOUCHABLEA little- known but highly regarded thriller from the Netherlands about a well- known Dutch traitor who helped the Nazis round up Jews to steal their belongings for himself. A unique story about the kind of collaborators that made Nazi occupations successful in European countries. RUN BOY RUNThe extraordinary story of how an 8- year- old boy escapes the Warsaw ghetto and survives in the woods. WHAT OUR FATHER’S DID: A NAZI LEGACYInterviews with children of Nazi war criminals explore the complex relationship modern- day German’s have with their history and the family members that committed atrocious crimes. NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPSArchival footage of concentration camps as they were recorded by military photographers as the Allied forces advanced into Germany. This documentary is the official report commissioned by Eisenhower and presented at the Nuremberg trials as evidence of war crimes. STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME“I was in a concentration camp with my wife and my girlfriend. As if life in a concentration camp wasn’t difficult enough. Ladies, this is going to be your new favorite. AUSCHWITZ: THE FINAL SOLUTIONA typical but excellent and thorough documentary series about the Auschwitz- Birkenau concentration camp. Dunkirk Early Reviews Praise the Film. The first reviews for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming WWII survival film Dunkirk have released, and the results are overwhelmingly positive. Nolan spent the vast majority of his career developing The Dark Knight Trilogy, which has since gone down as one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history, yet he never stopped pursuing original films, such as The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar. However, since the start of his career, Nolan has always wanted to make a movie based on the Battle of Dunkirk. For those that don’t know, the Battle of Dunkirk and its subsequent evacuation, code- named Operation Dynamo, was an extraordinary departure of 4. Dunkirk, France between May 2. June 4, 1. 94. 0. The miraculous evacuation is a story that many Europeans know, and it’s something that Nolan has wanted to bring to life on the big screen for quite some time. One of the greatest pleasures to be derived from watching films is the ability to travel to places you'd never be able to see otherwise. Aside from fantastical. New on Netflix UK in June 2017: the best movies and tv shows coming soon. Release dates for your favorite Netflix movies and TV series - including information about DVD releases and Instant Streaming. Updated Weekly. In order to capture the full scale of the battle and evacuation, the film is being told from three different perspectives — from the air, the land, and the sea — which has been evident through all the movie’s marketing materials. Last week, the first social media reactions to Nolan’s Dunkirk emerged online, and the consensus was overwhelmingly positive. Now, the first reviews have released, and the critical consensus seems to fall in- line with previous reactions, with many critics hailing the film as an unconventional masterpiece, one that doesn’t focus on the traditional horrors of war, yet expertly communicates the terror of those involved in the evacuation. You can read SPOILER- FREE excerpts from selected reviews below, with links back to the original reviews, if you’re interested in reading the full reviews. THR – Todd Mc. Carthy. Dunkirk is an impressionist masterpiece. These are not the first words you expect to see applied to a giant- budgeted summer entertainment made by one of the industry’s most dependably commercial big- name directors. But this is a war film like few others, one that may employ a large and expensive canvas but that conveys the whole through isolated, brilliantly realized, often private moments more than via sheer spectacle, although that is here too. Somber, grim and as resolute in its creative confidence as the British are in this ultimate historical narrative of having one’s back to the wall, this is the film that Christopher Nolan earned the right to make thanks to his abundant contributions to Warner Bros. He’s made the most of it. IGN – Daniel Krupa. Dunkirk doesn’t dwell on the horror of war but instead successfully conveys the sheer terror of it all through both small, human acts and deafening scenes of conflict. This isn’t a war story that leads to victory – that’s not what the story of Dunkirk is about – it was a retreat, an inglorious defeat. The war would continue for five more years. But through its miraculous events, Nolan and an outstanding cast of both young unknowns and veterans are able to depict not only the overwhelming, inhuman forces in play but the power of small acts of decency and bravery. Variety – Peter Debruge. Steven Spielberg laid claim to the Normandy beach landing, Clint Eastwood owns Iwo Jima, and now, Christopher Nolan has authored the definitive cinematic version of Dunkirk. Unlike those other battles, however, this last was not a conventional victory, but more of a salvaged retreat, as the German offensive forced a massive evacuation of English troops early in World War II. And unlike those other two directors, Nolan is only nominally interested in the human side of the story as he puts his stamp on the heroic rescue operation, offering a bravura virtual- eyewitness account from multiple perspectives — one that fragments and then craftily interweaves events as seen from land, sea and air. EW – Chris Nashawaty. By the end of Dunkirk, what stands out the most isn’t its inspirational message or everyday heroism. It’s the small indelible, unshakeable images that accumulate like the details in the corner of a mural. A PTSD soldier walking into the surf to his death. The sight of a hit German plane silently pinwheeling down into the sea like a paper airplane. The female nurses handing out tea and comforting words to the haunted men when they’re rescued. This is visceral, big- budget filmmaking that can be called Art. It’s also, hands down, the best motion picture of the year so far. The Wrap – Alonso Duralde. Christopher Nolan makes pop movies that aspire to be art — and vice versa — and he has perhaps never served his twin goals as successfully as he does in “Dunkirk.” In telling the story of the rescue of hundreds of thousands of blockaded Allied forces in the early days of World War II, Nolan has crafted a film that’s sensational in every sense of the word; it aims for both the heart and the head, to be sure, but arrives there via the central nervous system. Nolan once again proves himself to be one of the industry’s best filmmakers, and his continual use of IMAX cameras — which reportedly accounted for up to 8. Furthermore, the film’s attention to detail, as well as its major focus on authenticity, helps provide audiences with a more profound experience than they likely would have had with a movie filled with CGI, though that doesn’t mean this film doesn’t feature its fair share of visual effects. Despite all of his success, Nolan has never been nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and judging by the early reviews, it sounds like Dunkirk just might be the movie that puts him in contention in the highly- coveted category. After all, war epics have a tendency for capturing the attention of the Academy. Source: Various (see links)Key Release Dates. Dunkirk release date: Jul 2. Top 1. 0 Great War Movies To Stream(Getty)On June 6, 1. Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy, France and forever changing the course of World War II and world history. Today is the 7. 2nd anniversary of that day, when over 4,0. Allied troops were killed and between 4,0. German soldiers were killed. Cinema has long been fascinated with D- Day and the events of World War II, both in Europe and the Pacific theater. Of course, during the war, Hollywood and other film centers mobilized their stars and talent behind the camera to make films about it. To this day, films about the war and all wars are made and many are available to stream. Unfortunately, you have to buy or rent Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line, so we’re looking at all great war films that are readily available right now. These are movies available if you have Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime subscriptions. When watching some war movies, you are often reminded of the human cost of fighting, no matter what the cause. The first six picks are World War II movies and there are four additional great war movies you can stream with a subscription. The Longest Day. Producer Daryl F. Zanuck’s The Longest Day (1. Netflix and Amazon. The three- hour film is an incredible, detailed oriented look at the Normandy landings and the list of stars is dizzying. John Wayne, Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, Henry Fonda, Mel Ferrer, Peter Lawford, Roddy Mc. Dowall, Robert Mitchum, Edmund O’Brien, Sal Mineo, George Segal and Robert Ryan are all in the cast. And there is a young Sean Connery in there as well. True, the film might not be as visceral or violent as Saving Private Ryan, but it’s a fascinating look at how D- Day came together. Twelve O’Clock High. Twelve O’Clock High (1. Henry King and starring Gregory Peck, is a fascinating look at the psyche of pilots. What’s even more fascinating about the film is that it was made just a few years after the war ended. Even Peck’s character isn’t immune to the intense pressures of war. The film is available on Netflix and Amazon. Ken Burns’ The War. While this isn’t technically a movie, Ken Burns’ TV documentaries are cinematic in nature. The War is, just like Burns’ seminal The Civil War, puts audiences in the shows of the average soldier. We’ve all heard stories about how great Eisenhower and Patton were, but Burns focuses on the soldier and how their families were impacted by war. It’s available on Netflix and Amazon. Rome Open City. Heading back to World War II, Rome Open City is the neorealist masterpiece by Roberto Rossellini that began the great director’s war trilogy. It’s available to stream on Hulu Plus, where you can also find Paisan and Germany Year Zero. In Which We Serve. Although David Lean is best known for The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, neither of those are available to stream with a subscription. So, I’m including his directing debut, In Which We Serve, which is available on Amazon. Directed with Noel Coward, the film was made during World War II and focuses on British sailors. In just 2. 0 minutes, Resnais takes audiences to the concentration camps and exposes their horror and the human lives lost there. It is available to stream on Hulu Plus. Full Metal Jacket. Stanley Kubrick’s take on the Vietnam War is available to stream on Netflix and it’s a must- see for anyone who has somehow avoided it. Yes, the film’s training first half is the movie’s most famous sequence. However, the second half, which puts those characters in the battlefield, is trademark Kubrick. The film is similar to Kubrick’s earlier war masterpiece, Paths of Glory, which was set during World War I. It’s as if Kubrick is telling us that war is hell, no matter where or when it is. Apocalypse Now. Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam classic is available on Hulu Plus and Amazon. Not much more can be said about the film other than that it just has to be seen to be believed. It’s a meditation on the cost of war and a look into the heart of darkness. Considering the film has no familiar faces or big stars, it makes the film feel even more realistic today. We have no preconceived notions of how these actors should act, so we can believe that they are just soldiers. This is available on Hulu Plus. Platoon. Since Platoon is available to stream on Amazon Prime, it would be hard to justify not including it here. Oliver Stone’s Best Picture winner is a bit like The Steel Helmet, in which the audience is asked to just follow a squad. This time though, it’s Vietnam. Also, you can watch actual footage of D- Day below. Stasera in TV - Oggi in TV. Il labirinto del fauno (Film). Le fatiche di Ercole. ANICA - Appuntamento al cinema. Operazione San Pietro. Palac, caly czas nie moglac przestac myslec o erekcji Kamila, zapewne podniecila go scena lozkowa z filmu. Kamil wydawal sie jakis dziwny, speszony moze wstydzil sie swojej wczorajszej reackji. Reszta dnia przebiegla jak codzien, prace domowe itp. Jednak kiedy nadszedl wieczor, bedac w laziecie zauwazylem pewna niecodzienna rzecz. W koszu na brudna bielizne lezal moj biustonosz ktory zostawilam wczesniej na szafce obok. Wyciagajac go zauzylam dziwnie wygladajac biala plame w jednej z miseczek. Postanowilam wybrac Kamilowi film, a sama ubralam swoja czerwona koszule nocna, i czarne stringi. Koszylka praktycznie nie odrywala biustu, lecz jej obcislosc nie zostawiala duzo do wyobrazni. Do salony weszlam z butelka czerwonego wina i usiadlam na kanapie obok Kamila. Nalalam nam wina, i zaczelismy ogladac komiedie romantyczna. Kompletnie nie moglam sie skupic na filmie, bo caly czas myslalam o pokrytym sperma staniku z ubikacji. Zalozyl noge, na noge i skrzyzowalam rece miedzy piersami, wiec dekolt byl teraz duzo bardziej widoczny. Nalewajac kamilowi trzecia lampke wina, sama juz w lekkim stanie upojenia, nachylilam sie nad nim obnazajac dekolt. Odruchowo spojzac na moje piersi, odrazu odwrocil wzrok i dostal rumienca na twarzy. Wtedy juz wiedzialam, pociagam swojego siostrzenca. Butelke wina pozniej, odwazylam sie zapytac kamila o sytuacje z toalety. Caly czas siedzac niezdarnie probowal ukryc erekcje w spodniach. Z usmiechem wlaczylam kolejny film, tym razem z innej kolekcji. Byk to jeden z . Zalozylam takze, czarne ponczochy i spilki, szybko poprawilam szminke i wlosy. Z dolnej szuflady wyjelam moj wibratorek i wrocilam do pokoju. Kamil nie mogl oderwac odemnie oczu, jego oczy wedrowaly z biustu na jedrna pupcie kiedy wchodzilam. Usiadlam na przeciwko niego, polozylam wibrator na stoliku i zapilam mentolowego papierosa. Kazalam mu zwolnic, bo noc jeszcze dluga a moja szparka byla coraz wilgotniejsza. Powoli wstalam z lampka wina, i usiadlam na tej samej sofie co on. Kamil powiedzial ze zawsze go podniecalam, i dosyc czesto . Nadal masowal swojego kutaska kiedy wzielam jego reke i nakierowalam na moja piers. Szybko zaczal ja masowac i piescic. Opuscilamwiec stanik, a Kamil wolno zaczal lizac moje sutki, rozkosz przeplywala przez moje cialo. Rozkladajac nogi, zaczelam pocierac lechtaczke rytmicznie, slyszalac dzwieki z filmu w tle. Kamil stal nagi przedemna z duzym kutasem na wysokosci moich duzych pierski. Zdjelam szybko stringi zostajac tylko w ponczochac i szpilkach. Powoli pocieralam wibratorkiem lechtaczke a Kamil patrzac, masturbowal sie namietnie. Kazda sekunda byla dla mnie ekstaza, ale to nie bylo wystarczajaco. Pochylilam sie nad nim, falujac piersami i powiedzialam . Chwycilam jego penisa w reke i zaczelam wolno poruszac w gore i w dol, Kamil jeczal coraz glosniej i glosniej kiedy zwiekszalam tempo. Usiadlam obok niego, rozlozylam nogi odslaniajac ogolona cipke i skierowalal jego reke na moje krocze. Jarytmicznie onanizowalam go, a on piescil moja lecztaczke. Powoli jednak wstawalam, klekajac przed siedzacym Kamilem i zaczelam lizac zoladz jego penisa. Film rozkrecil sie juz na dobre, dzwieki z tla podniecaly mnie jeszcze bardziej. Wreszcie wzielam jego kutaska do buzi i zaczelam ssac. Zaczynajac powoli, bralam go glebiej i glebiej zostawiajac czerwone slady szminki. Jego oddech jeszcze bardziej przyspieszyl kiedy pocieralam jego mokrego kutasa pomiedzy moimi piersami. Wstalam i podeszlam do skrytki gdzie moj byly maz trzymal prezerwatywy, na szczescie zostalo jeszcze duzo. Wybralam jedna, i uwodzicielko otrzyzylam zebami. Nalozylam gumke i powoli usiadlam na twardym kutasie w pozycji na jezdza. Wydalam pisk rozkoszy kiedy wszedl gleboko w moja cipke. Zaczelam ujezdzac jego kutasa kiedy jego jezyk wedrowal wokol moich sutkow, a rece piescily posladki. Wygielam sie na kolanach, a jego kutas wszedl gleboko w moja cipke. Seksowne ponczochy i szpilki nadal byly na mnie kiedy Kamil zapinal mnie od tylu. Czulam jak orgazm nadchodzil, drgawki rozkoszky ogarnely moja cipke i krzyknelam z rozkoszky. Wlozylam go do ust i zaczelam ruszac jezykiem wokol glowki, jednoczesnie ssajac. Slyszac przyspieszony oddech Kamila, wyjelam jego kutasa i sperma wystrzelila na moje usta i piersi. Worst Sci- Fi & Fantasy Movies That Had No Excuse. Bad sci- fi and fantasy movies aren’t merely the province of low- budget quickies. Sometimes all the money and talent in Hollywood can’t save the world from celluloid disasters. So, rather than just a list of bad movies, this is a list of bad movies that had no excuse: movies by respected filmmakers, or from major studios. Movies with box office stars, or sequels to other movies that were great. These are the epic fails of fantasy and sci- fi. And this time, the list has been compiled not from a reader vote, but by an panel comprising the SFX team, the SFX bloggers and a few of our special friends, including Paul Cornell, Joe Abercrombie, Jayne Nelson and Steve O’Brien. So feel free to call us all sorts of names. That’s when you begin to realise the folly of basing a film on a ’6. TV show format that has “weekly episodic format” hardwired into its DNA. In the small screen the concept of “lost” in space was merely a hook upon which to hang stories. In the film, “lost” needs to become the plot engine. Sadly, screen director Stephen Hopkins and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman lost the plot completely, and turned the film into an insipid, visually bland time travel tale about a father/son relationship. So where does that leave the women in the family? Ironically, in a story about the fourth dimension all females on board are reduced to two- dimensional clich. Gary Oldman continues to channel the camp spirit of the original Dr Zachary Smith as if he hasn’t got the memo about how this film version is playing it straight. In the end, you think he’s made the right decision; if you have to appear in this dross you may as well have some fun while you’re there. Worst thing about it: Blawp, the CG space monkey, which actually looks less convincing than Zoonie the Lazoon in Gerry Anderson’s Fireball XL5 . The film was originally shot with Blawp being played by a Jim Henson Workshop creation, with the CGI version later slapped on over the top. They needn’t have bothered. Popeye (1. 98. 0) Director: Robert Altman. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp shows off his CGI. Https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/14/15802150/neill-blomkamp-experimental-sci-fi-film-rakka-watch-interview “When the audience understands that this isn’t the. Legend has it that Robert Altman, director of such acclaimed movies as MASH and Nashville in the early ’7. Popeye because, after a series of flops, he needed a hit to help him finance the kind of films he really wanted to make again. This is, in itself, not a bad plan. One fatal flaw – Popeye flopped. Very, very badly. It’s not difficult to see why. Although the film has been reclaimed by some strange revisionists as a misunderstood classic, the rest of just see a musical which has no decent musical numbers at all (well, can you name any? BravoFACT.com your source for short film funding information online; watch exclusive independent films and new drama movies online; access the best short films. Rollerball is in this list somewhere – but how high did it reach? Bad sci-fi and fantasy movies aren’t merely the province of low-budget quickies. If you though all that talk about taxes was a bit dull and out- of- place in The Phantom Menace, then steer well clear of Popeye . The worst thing about it: The songs. They may have been written by Harry Nilsson (famous for such soaringly simple pop beauty as “Everybody’s Talkin’” and “Without You”) but there are no classics here. They range from forgettable to unlistenable, made even worse by the range of irritating comedy voices they’re sung in (Robin Williams as Popeye sings like a goat on helium and Bluto sounds like Krusty the Clown). Johnny Mnemonic (1. Director: Robert Longo. The idea of William Gibson, the author who defined cyberpunk, writing the screenplay to a film based on another of his cyberpunk stories seemed so exciting back in the early ’9. This was going to be Neuromancer on screen, surely? Sadly, Gibson proved to be one of those writers whose talents didn’t extend to screenplays. Although based on a thoroughly enticing idea – that Keanu Reeve’s head is so empty, you could fill it with data and use him as some kind of digital carrier pigeon – once you get past the set- up, the film descends into an incoherent series of set pieces randomly cut and pasted from various Gibson stories. Reeves’s standout acting moment is a rant about room service – “Listen. You listen to me. You see that city over there? THAT’S where I’m supposed to be. Not down here with the dogs, and the garbage, and the f**king last month’s newspapers blowing back and forth. I’ve had it with them, I’ve had it with you, I’ve had it with ALL THIS – I WANT ROOM SERVICE!!!” The Oscar is still in the post.. Worst thing about it: The psychic dolphin – it’s an idea that works on paper, but just looks embarrassingly naff on screen (not helped by the fact that the film came out while sea. Quest DSV, which featured an irritating talking dolphin, was airing on TV). Dungeons And Dragons (2. Director: Courtney Solomon. Quite where the $3. There are home made Lord Of The Rings skits on You. Tube these days that are better looking. From the gaudy sets, to the plastic props, to the Pound Shop fancy dress costumes and the inept FX, this is a symphony of crapness. The acting is uniformly terrible (and there are some good actors here too – Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch), as if all the cast is in a pact to piss off the director as much as possible (and yes, that is Tom Baker in the photo). In fact, it’s so terrible, that under normal circumstances it would be much higher in a “worst of” list, except that in this case, we think everybody involved knew it was a bit crap. There’s a dwarf and an elf in it, because there are dwarves and elves in the game, but they have sod all to do except look ridiculous. Spider- Man III (2. Director: Sam Raimi. So much has been written about the “failure” of Spider- Man 3 , it easy to forget it was actually a massive hit – in terms of box office the biggest of the three Raimi/Spidey films. So Raimi clearly made a crowd- pleaser if not a fan pleaser. Part of the problem was one of expectation. The first two Spider- Man films were both deliriously good. Raimi had defined a new way of telling superhero films on screen. But then inexplicably, he seemed to transform, Jekyll & Hyde style, from Burton- Raimi to Schumacher- Raimi, giving us, in Spider- Man 3 , a film that suffered the same overblown overload of elements as Batman Forever and Batman And Robin (though thankfully with fewer puns). Too many villains (Venom, Green Goblin, Sandman); too many plotlines; too many gimmicks (disco dancing Peter Parker!). The film in itself isn’t that bad, but as the third part of an otherwise outstanding trilogy, it felt, and still feels for many, like some kind of betrayal of trust. The worst things about it: Venom being completely and utterly wasted. Though the dance routine comes close. Episode II has a middle, a middle and more middle, and none of it is very interesting. And while Episode I had some ropey dialogue, it didn’t go anywhere nears as low as Episode II ’s “I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.” The worst thing about it: C3. PO’s inability to SHUT THE F**K UP! Robo. Cop III (1. Director: Fred Dekker Robo. Cop 2 may have lacked the wit, social satire and human story of the original film, but it was a competently made, entertaining follow- up. With a plot borrowed from *batteries not included (we kid you not – it’s “plucky homeowners versus eviction by nasty businessmen”), it’s a cheap, lame effort, which throws in gimmicks like Ninjabots in a failed effort to liven things up. Frank Miller may be credited as a screenwriter, but little of his input remains. A better proof of the law of diminishing returns is difficult to find. The worst thing about it: When Robo. Cop suddenly grows wings and flies. Judge Dredd (1. 99. Director: Danny Cannon. With a new incarnation of 2. AD ’s legendary lawman rumbling towards the big screen, spare a thought for Hollywood's first swing at it. It had so much promise! A much- loved comic property, a multi- million dollar budget plus a supporting cast of Max von Sydow's calibre, it would be our first chance to see Mega- City One brought to life. But lumbered with Sylvester Stallone as the lead (no way they'd draft in a mega- star and then keep his face covered up!) and handed to a green director, it pleased neither fans nor mainstream audiences. Didn't help that the conspiracy plot was clich. Stallone himself – who won a Razzie Award for it – later confessed to Uncut magazine: . Just think of all the opportunities there were to do interesting stuff with the Cursed Earth scenes. It didn't live up to what it could have been. It probably should have been much more comic, really humorous, and fun. The worst thing about it: Dredd taking his helmet off (or “Send in the clones!”). Blade Trinity (2. Director: David S Goyer. David S Goyer may be celebrated these days as the scriptwriter behind Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but his earlier attempt to make a leap into the director’s chair himself saw him come a bit of a cropper. A subplot about vampires giving Blade bad PR fizzles out after 2. After that it’s Blade and his new buddies – a group of vampire hunters called Nightstalkers – versus the drabbest Dracula ever put on screen. Okay, you don’t expect Shakespearean scripts from films like this, but it doesn’t even deliver on what you do expect. The fight scenes are little more than bar room brawls; the weaponry is humdrum; the FX are sparse and unspectacular; the locations drab. There’s a massively increased humour quotient, which occasionally hits home, but mostly relies on Blade’s irritating comedy sidekick saying “F**k!” and “Dick!” a lot. And the less said about Wesley Snipes’s delivery of “coochie- coo”, the better.. The worst thing about it: A vampire Pomeranian pooch. Star Trek Insurrection (1. Director: Jonathan Frakes. Another possible surprise in this list – after all, perceived wisdom is that The Final Frontier and Nemesis are the true dogs of the Trek franchise. But we beg your indulgence. No, actually we don’t because that would require you to watch Insurrection again, and we wouldn’t want to put you through that. So trust us instead, because we watched it again for the sake of this feature – Insurrection is dispiritingly bad. You may not recall how bad, because most of it is so very, very dull it's instantly forgettable. A God Crash Lands on Earth in This Kaiju Short Film. Brent Bonacorso has been delivering fantastical, heartsick CGI short films for a while now, and his latest drops a giant alien into downtown L. A. The Narrow World riffs on the talking head documentary style but doesn’t cling too tightly to it. It features a young Department of Homeland Security researcher (Karim Saleh), a clinical psychologist (Julia Cavanaugh), a retired Colonel (Scott Bailey Gagain), and a giant alien moping around a major metropolitan center. At first, its appearance and passive response to its surroundings is a Rorschach test that finds some hoping for great advancement, some gearing up for war, and some searching their own souls. More than a metaphor, the alien presence is also a vision of spirituality that conjures contemplation about what it means to be a tiny speck walking through a familiar neighborhood in the shadow of a massive, walking unknown. The design of the colossus is fun—like a metallic, cycloptic flamingo—but the alien itself is a tourist in the plot. Simultaneously the center of attention for its characters, but not the focus for the audience. There’s a poetry to how Bonacorsa has considered the variety of responses to the event, and it’s anchored by strong, mystical CGI work and a deep, clear sense of longing among the tiny humans who fill the screen. The short film also finds some intriguing directions as we get more information. There’s not exactly a twist; it’s more of a re- contextualization that gives the characters more life and demonstrates why Bonacorsa chose the faux- doc style. Overall, it’s fun, contemplative, sweet, and lonely. A wonderful collage to immerse yourself in. It’s also hard to imagine King Kong wanting to fight this thing. What do you think?
